One of my favourite winter rituals, when the garden looks bare and unwelcoming, is to seek out its hidden treasures. There’s always something to be found... the first snowdrop, a tiny dwarf iris, a hellebore, or the shiny seed pods of a lily. Even the translucent, papery seed heads of honesty plants, long past flowering, feel like a thing to be appreciated. In the glasshouse, a crop of Icelandic poppies waits to bloom, but when one flower opens ahead of the rest, it's a rare winter treat, a burst of life amidst the stillness.
